Getting started with Samsung Gear VR

After the presence of Samsung’s Gear VR was confirmed a few weeks earlier, audience now has opportunity to find out how to use this device, especially a pre-term type of Gear VR Manager. HMT Manager contains a lot of primary functions. One of them is VR Lock designed to let the consumer to activate a safety lock during the time that he/she is using the headset. There is also Warning Alert, made to notify the user after each 60 minutes that the device is connected. Option called Undock Alert will provide user an adviser to place the smartphone back to the Gear VR if it is undocked. Also display timeout value can be set through corresponding option. The Galaxy phone’s sensors can be calibrated by Calibration, so the smartphone display fits to the requirements of Gear VR. Developer Mode is the option that guides you around the Gear VR’s essential functions.

To use Gear VR it’s important that Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is updated to the latest version of operating system. Also you should place the 16GB micro SD card provided alongside Gear VR in your phone.

The Note 4 should be attached to the front of the VR headset where docking area could be found. Left side of the front area contains a micro-USB plug used to place Note 4 in. The display should be facing inside.

After Galaxy phone is placed inside the Gear VR you won’t be able to manage the device via touchscreen nor the keys. Managing throughout user interface is enabled by the back key and the touchpad. If you hold long the back key the phone’s rear camera will activate and provide you a video of the realistic surroundings. By short pressing of back key you will be brought back to the virtual reality. S Voice application lets you to navigate the device by voice instructions.

At the beginning of the VR experience Samsung has provided users with a short tutorial of how to employ the Gear VR. Pressing the touchpad placed at the right of the device will allow you to move to the following menu. To select the object you are watching at you should knock on the touchpad. This action also stops films and actions in the games.

A Bluetooth controller can be connected to the smartphone which will make navigation through the primary Oculus Home section easier. Navigation can be performed by the left analog handle on the controller.

VR enthusiast will find this setup the easiest in the nearest past of virtual reality devices. Considering that Gear VR isn’t a developer kit you will realize there is no need to spend much time updating operating system, checking on resolution settings and calibrating cameras. Setting up the device, downloading and installing operating system will take about 15 minutes. This includes restarting the phone after installing the firmware.

For the best immersive experience it’s unavoidable to use headphones. You can simply plug them in to the one-eighth-inch sound socket. The transparent cover made of plastic doesn’t have to be removed off the foreground part of the Gear VR. It can stay there permanently according to your choice.

As it’s said before, the hardware of the gear VR is made by Samsung, and Oculus VR is developing software. So far, Gear VR seems to be the best performance of VR technology, with its modular design.
