Doom VFR is a recent game of the Doom series and was recently launched on 1st of December 2017. This brutal action game was highly anticipated by PlayStation gaming fans world over. The game has been officially launched for PSVR and Vive. Doom VFR brings the series of fast-paced gameplay experience to VR which allows players to fully immerse themselves in the game’s world.
Most of the Steam VR games support Oculus Rift by default without the need for any explicit patch. At launch Doom VFR was not working on Oculus Rift due to the significant dispute between Bethesda’s parent company ZeniMax and Oculus.
To solve the issue, a patch to Steam VR’s beta branch was done which has enabled the game to work with the popular Oculus Rift headset. But that fix is not included by default in the main branch and it must be obtained separately. Most of the users have reported that the game is working properly on Rift after the installation of the patch.
After its first launch on Steam, the Rift users were not able to use it and many of them predicted that the game would automatically shut down. However, within 24 hours of the game launch, Valve deployed an update to the SteamVR Beta branch. After this fix, the issue was solved and Rift users could play Droom VFR conveniently. However, it is still unknown whether the Rift blockage was unknown or intentional.
The change made to the Steam VR Beta is as follows
The Valve added a placeholder for Rift users in the hidden area mesh as a work around to solve the issue pertaining to Doom VFR and this even works for other game titles experiencing such issues.
How to get Steam VR Betapatch
The recently launched patch has been made available only for the Steam VR Beta Branch. That is not available for the main branch which is mostly used by players by default. The users of the main branch mainly get updates from the beta branch within a day or two, but if you do not wait for that long and want to play Doom VFR on your Rift device right now then you must switch to Steam VR Beta.
The following are the steps to do that.
1. Launch Stream
2. Go to the option of Library and then Tools
3. Search thetools for “Steam VR”
4. Right click on the “Steam VR” option and then select Properties
5. In the properties pop up box, click on “Betas” tab and then switch the beta drop-down selection to “beta-Steam VR Beta Update”
6. Close the popup window of Properties and Steam VR Beta will be automatically downloaded for use.
It is quite easy to shift back to the main branch just like you shifted to beta branch. So once the main branch gets updated with the patch launched for the Rift fix then you can switch to the main branch and continue enjoying Doom VFR.
By following steps, one can easily get access to Doom VFR even by using Oculus Rift headset. The above method is 100% tested, so try it out now and continue enjoying Doom VFR.
Bethesda apologizes and explains Doom VFR Oculus Rift issue
In a meanwhile Bethesda released statement explaining it happened because “the development team has not yet had an opportunity to test, optimize, and refine the game for Oculus Rift.”
Read the full statement:
“Today, DOOM VFR was officially released for HTC Vive and PSVR. Our development team has focused on making the game look and play great on those two platforms first. However, as we’ve always said, our goal with all of our VR titles is to bring them to as many platforms as possible and we continue to evaluate expanding these options. When and if we have more information about additional platforms, we will let everyone know.
At launch, we are only supporting Vive and PSVR. While we’ve heard Steam has been updated to allow the game to be playable on Rift via a Beta, the development team has not yet had an opportunity to test, optimize, and refine the game for Oculus Rift. That is why the game was not playable on Rift immediately; we don’t want anyone to have a bad experience on something we haven’t tested yet.
We understand Rift owners found this frustrating today, and we apologize for any confusion. Our goal is always to provide players the most stable and optimized experience on every platform we support.”
